Light Sentence for Man Who Had Sex with Girl, 12

  • Print
WAUPUN - A 20-year-old Waupun man convicted of having sex with a 12-year-old girl has received a lighter sentence after the girl's mother asked for leniency. Brett A. Garcia was sentenced Tuesday to four months in jail with work-release privileges. He had pleaded no contest in December to a charge of first-degree sexual assault of a child. Fond du Lac County assistant district attorney Scott Mortier says Garcia didn't force the girl to have sex but he still deserved some jail time. Mortier noted the girl's mother wrote a statement saying she wasn't mad at Garcia, and he wasn't the first person with whom her daughter had sex. Defense attorney Todd Snow says he agrees with the decision. He says just registering as a sex offender will affect Garcia for the rest of his life.
