Why Are Teenagers "Sexting"?

  • Print
WAUKESHA - A teenage boy forwards a nude picture of his 14-year-old ex-girlfriend to classmates. Now dozens of kids could face child pornography charges. But why do teens take these pictures in the first place? Medical College of Wisconsin child psychiatrist Jennifer Derenne says many teenagers just don't think before they do things. Derenne told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Shelley Walcott, "I think a part of it is that they are just not able to fully appreciate the future and the fact that the decisions they make now have consequences." Not to mention criminal consequences. Waukesha police say they intend to pursue this case vigorously and make an example of the 16 year old boy. Captain Mark Stigler says the 14-year-old girl involved in this case and her family are "devastated." He is warning anyone who received the picture of her not to pass it on. "If they choose to forward it on send it on or download it to their own computer they have just committed a felony crime and they are subjecting themselves to us coming after them," he said. Waukesha police are still investigating this case, and they're asking parents to check their children's cell phones and computers for any inappropriate images.
