Local NewsTough Driving Conditions in Racine CountyBy Jay Olstad
RACINE COUNTY - For Racine County Sheriff deputy Kevin Kazmierski, keeping up with all the vehicle spinouts was hard enough Saturday, let along getting them out.
"Headquarters, we have a vehicle in the ditch, he said while TODAY'S TMJ4 tagged along during his shift.
"They just don't slow down," Kazmierski said.
In fact, we didn't even make it onto the interstate before we saw a SUV get stuck along the on-ramp to I-94 in Sturtevant.
"Basically just a lot of vehicle run offs, no serious accidents," he said.
"And keeping you busy," asked TODAY'S TMJ4's Jay Olstad?
Oh, definitely," he replied.
And it’s busy for tow truck drivers...who responded to dozens of spin outs Saturday.
"How busy are you," asked Olstad?
"Like one every half hour at least," said Bob Katterhagen of Bob's Mobile in Sturtevant.
The culprit? It depends on who you ask.
The drivers say it's the blanket of blowing snow.
"Lots of cars in the ditch. Changing lanes is a big problem," said Cory Diltz.
Deputy Kazmierski says it's the drivers going too fast in that blanket of snow.
"You just have to give yourself enough time, half hour to 45 minutes extra and do a safe speed and you'll get to where you'll get to where you're going," he said.
While we rode with deputy Kazmierski conditions improved considerably.
But earlier in the morning, we were driving about 35 miles an hour.
"That’s a safe speed," he said.
He says because even if you go the speed limit in this stuff, it doesn't limit you from going off the road.
