Economy Down, Divorces Up

  • Print

A downturn in the economy hasn't brought a downturn in the amount of divorces happening in Milwaukee County, but there are fewer lawyers getting involved.

More than half of Milwaukee County's divorce cases didn't have a lawyer representing either side.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Goulee told the Journal Sentinel that there's a mentality where people simply say, " 'I can't afford an attorney.' "

That means more do-it-yourself divorces.

Milwaukee and Waukesha County both report a slight increase in divorce cases in 2008 compared to '07.

Family law attorney Stephanie Benske says the recession has tripled the amount of her cases that involve a bankruptcy or foreclosure.
