Street Racing Possible Cause of Deadly South Side Crash
Street racing may be to blame for a deadly crash that killed two young men.
The crash happened Tuesday evening on South Chase Avenue near Oklahoma Avenue on Milwaukee's south side.
An eyewitness tried to help, but it was too late.
"I know what it's like to lose people, but not that way," said Nicole. She was the first person on scene of this deadly crash, trying to keep the teenage passenger alive.
"He would put his head down, and I said 'You gotta stay with me, you gotta stay with me.' "
Nicole was out in these bitter cold temperatures until medical help arrived.
She says she did everything she could to save him, but it simply wasn't enough.
"it's a little bit hard because I know he passed away, and I couldn't do more to help him."
Esteban Mendez, 17, died at the hospital.
The driver, Justin Renteria who was 21, died at the scene.
A pizza delivery driver told police he saw them street racing.
Nicole didn't see that, but says she wouldn't be surprised.
"With how popular this block is, it's possible," believed Nicole.
Police are investigating that possibility, while nicole mourns the loss of a young man she only knew for a few minutes, but someone she says she'll never forget.
"i feel sorry for that loss."
Nicole says Esteban was able to tell her his name.
He also told her he didn't know how they crashed because he apparently blacked out.
