When it's this cold, we all like to keep our car warm.

But if your car is idling on a public street, alley or parking lot, look out, because you could get busted.

TODAY'S TM4's Charles Benson caught Jimmy Jackson, who's from Milwaukee, outside his car with it running and the keys still in it.

Jackson didn't know that it was illegal to do so on a public street in the City of Milwaukee.

He's not alone.

Benson found a lot of people leaving their car on to run a quick errand.

Keeping your car running with the keys in it, if you're not in the car, will cost you $20 in Milwaukee if you do it on a public street.

Last year, Milwaukee Police handed out 111 citations.

Kenosha and West Bend have similar ordinances, but Waukesha allows idling your car while you're not inside it.

It's not illegal to warm up your car in your own driveway, but remember, any time you leave your keys in the car, it's an invitation for thieves.
