Last Minute Cold Preparations

By Dan O'Donnell

MILWAUKEE - Dozens of people have been busy making last minute preparations for the oncoming cold, and though the deep freeze is now just hours away, there is still time to winterize.

"Make sure the water is shut off to the outside house connections," said home repair expert Tom Feiza. "That's essential."

If a home's windows are old and leaky, Feiza suggests using removable caulk on the inside.

"It very easily just peels off in the springtime, so it's a good quick fix, easy to do, and stops that cold wind from blowing in."

Homeowners can also keep sink pipes from freezing by simply leaving the doors open and using a regular light bulb to warm those pipes up. Even grabbing a fan and pointing it at the pipes can be a huge help.

"What will happen is, that will create enough air flow so the pipes will not freeze," Feiza explained.

Temperatures will be so cold that even people who own newer homes need to watch out.

"If you live in a newer home and it's your first year, you really should worry about it," warned Feiza. "You live in a newer home and you've been there for a few years, then you know what to expect."
