Local NewsOops, That's Not WisconsinBy Tom Murray
MADISON - There is a glaring error on the front page of the state agency's website. Even though it's been there for weeks, no one on the inside noticed the problem until today.
Browsing that page, State Senator Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee) found something not quite right.
"To me, it's just a matter of state pride," he said.
Web surfers see a picturesque skyline when they log onto http://cfis.wi.gov. However, this astute state representative realized the city in that image cannot be found anywhere in Wisconsin.
"That's not Madison. That's not Milwaukee," noticed Plale. "Then I actually realized that's actually Minneapolis."
That's right… Minneapolis, Minnesota.
"You might want to see a picture of, well, Wisconsin," Plale told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray.
The state paid PCC Technology Group, a Connecticut company, a lot of money to design the site. While the city may not be in Wisconsin, the dome pictured is the correct State Capitol building in Madison.
The webpage belongs to the recently formed Wisconsin Government Accountability Board (WGAB). The public is not supposed to see this site until tests and the design are done in late January.
"I'm glad someone did call it to our attention before we announced it to the public," said Kyle Richmond, WGAB spokesperson. "It is a mistake to have another state's city on there."
As for Plale, he thinks tracking down a picture from Wisconsin isn't too much to ask.
"Maybe some guy out in Connecticut thinks Minneapolis looks just like Milwaukee," quipped Plale. "He probably thinks the Humpty dome looks just like Miller Park, too."
Richmond tells TODAY'S TMJ4 that the agency plans to change the image before the official public launch in a few weeks. As for now, the picture of Minneapolis is still there.
