Ald. Donovan: More Fines For Not Shoveling
By Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - Clear those walkways or else.
One Milwaukee alderman wants more fines handed out if you don't get that shovel out.
The snow fell, and now it’s time to shovel the sidewalks but many on the south side aren't doing it and Alderman Bob Donovan and sanitation inspectors are taking it very seriously.
“I am tired of the damn owners where we give them another 72 hours or give them another month or whatever to shovel. We've got to start sticking it to these people,” Ald. Donovan said during a meeting at City Hall Wednesday.
Thursday, Donovan and Sanitation Inspector Dennis Murawski were on the south side, ready to stick it to those people.
These people are repeat offenders. After every snowstorm they don't shovel their snow,” Murawski said.
So those people will now get a warning to shovel their snow.
“A lot of these people are nowhere to be found,” Murawski said.
Next, they'll get a written notice to shovel the sidewalks in 24 hours. If not, the city will do it and you will pay. The charge goes on your property tax.
“Not only that, we've got Milwaukee police officers that are in these areas on bicycles and on foot, and if they have a foot chase or a foot pursuit, yeah they could kill themselves. It’s incredible what could happen,” Murawski said.
Donovan and Murawski also worry about the elderly, disabled or anyone who has to take a chance walking on these sidewalks.
“They know we're here. We're hoping that maybe if they don't get the word this way, that they'll get the word and hit them in the pocketbook,” Ald. Donovan said.
So, clear your walkways or you’ll get a hefty fine.
