Local NewsFather, Son Stranded In Woods During StormBy Katie DeLong
FOND DU LAC COUNTY - A father and son were stranded in the snow over the weekend, which lead to a dramatic rescue on Monday.
Miguel Bustos, 36, of Milwaukee and his son Andres, 17, were hunting Sunday in the Kettle Moraine Forest near Mauthe Lake. Snow blew in and covered the trail back out of the woods.
So what started out as a father-son hunting trip turned into a, cold, scary night stranded in the woods.
Andres Bustos put his arm around his dad, Miguel, when TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey talked with them Monday about how they survived a snowstorm in a thick, dark, forest.
“My dad found this pine, like these pines together, and we just took cover underneath the pines and it was cold, it was pretty cold, we were just waiting it out,” Andres explained.
They shivered in the dark woods all night not knowing where they were.
Their clothes were soaked.
“I was afraid of my son because I was thinking he's not going to make it. I was so cold and he was shaking all night and I was so worried about him,” Miguel said.
They have a Cricket cell phone, and Cricket doesn't have service in the Kettle Moraine, but Monday morning, they tried making a 911 call and it worked.
Fond du Lac Sheriff's Deputy Nick Evans and his colleagues went to help.
“It was windy, it was very windy. There was probably like 10 inches of snow, wind chill was a factor,” Deputy Evans said.
Deputies and a DNR warden arrived and turned on their sirens.
Miguel and Andres heard them.
“I just told my son, ‘We've got to run to where we sound the sirens,’” Miguel said.
It took 45 miserable minutes for the two to reach rescuers. They were ready for dry clothes and a hot meal.
Even after what they went through in the woods, the father and son say they're going to keep hunting.
