Local NewsLearning To Drive In The Snow Over AgainBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE – Driving in the first big snow of the season was difficult for some people.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Melanie Stout rode along with the Milwaukee Police Department Monday after the first major snowfall of the season.
A lot of traffic and a lot of snow meant a lot of accidents.
Milwaukee police see it every year: drivers seem to forget how to drive in snowy conditions.
“I think the biggest thing that we see in the snow is driving too close. It seems to be the main cause for a lot of accidents that we get,” Officer Scott Thorne said.
Of course, driving too fast for the conditions is another problem.
Officers like Thorne are on the lookout for reckless drivers.
“We keep an eye on that a lot, because obviously we don’t want to see any accidents, so that’s the best way to prevent that is to enforce some of those ordinances,” Officer Thorne said.
Another problem police find is drivers not brushing off their cars before they hit the roads. That causes major visibility problems for your and others.
Clearing license plates and break lights is also important.
Even though it is Wisconsin, police seem to respond to more accidents the first few snowfalls.
“People need to learn how to adjust to the snow conditions and drive in them,” Officer Thorne said.
So what do you do if you are in an accident?
“If their car is drivable and no one is injured and they are able to get their car out of the traffic they should, especially in conditions like this. Visibility is bad and someone could end up hitting you because you’re sitting in the traffic lane,” Officer Thorne said.
If you are injured or can't drive your car, call police. Otherwise exchange names, numbers, ask for ID and drive to a police district.
“More importantly than the plate number you should get a VIN number cause then you know the VIN number is listed to the car,” Officer Thorne said.
