People Preparing For First Major Snow

By Jay Olstad

MILWAUKEE - Before the snow fell down Sunday afternoon, some things still had to be picked up. "I think we're in pretty good shape," said Jim Severin. This Whitefish Bay homeowner scurried to get his house in order before the predicted snow fall. "I think I got pretty much everything done. The gutters are cleaned out. Most of the leaves are gone," he said. Sam Rappa provided the same soundtrack a few blocks away. Raking leaves was just one of many things on his to-do list. "Getting the snow blowers ready probably this evening...making sure they work," said Rappa. And it's not just homeowners that were busy Sunday but the Ace Hardware store in Glendale at 6224 N. Port Washington Rd. "It was just bananas today," said Ralph Ignatowski. "It was busier than Friday, you know after Thanksgiving." Ralph, an ACE Hardware worker, claims people lined up outside even before the store opened Sunday morning. "Wild, it's all you can say. Everybody is just buying snow blowers, we can't put them together fast enough," he said. Snow blowers are popular and so are snow shovels. Everyone in line had one. Josh Roemer bought three for his snow removal business. "I was just coming in for some reinforcements for normal shovels and found these and grabbed three up before they were gone," said Roemer. And so it begins, another winter and another snow fall. "Unsettling, A little too soon for that," said Rappa. And we have four or five months to go until spring. "We don't want another 110 inches again," said Roemer.
