Local NewsShelters Packed For Thanksgiving DinnerBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - A Thanksgiving meal brings everyone to the table.
This year, the tables at homeless shelters are packed.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Ty Millburn was at All Saints Catholic Church on 26th & Capitol Drive and the Milwaukee Rescue Mission Thursday afternoon.
People who work with the homeless and the needy say in these tough economic times demand is great.
Hundreds of people packed into the Milwaukee Rescue Shelter for a hot meal on Thanksgiving Day. Workers served up 1,500 pounds of turkey, 80 gallons of stuffing and 40 gallons of gravy.
Organizers say with the economy in the tank, they have a lot of people to feed this year.
“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and we've been through some economic tough times and this one just look like it’s going to be a lot longer and deeper than in the past,” Patrick Vanderbergh from the Milwaukee Rescue Shelter said.
Vanderbergh said the shelter is also beginning to feel the squeeze of the tightening economy because they rely solely on private donations to feed and house hundreds of people.
“Everyone is having a hard time, even people who don't need to come to rescue missions but a lot of those people in the past have helped us out and some of those people don't have the means to help us out anymore,” Vanderbergh said.
At All Saints Church Thursday, volunteers were hard at work feeding about 250 people. Father Mark Dierderichs says not a day goes by he's not reminded of what a tough time some folks are having.
“The need is growing the people who come to the rectory door are just in need of the basic things like the rent,” Dierderichs said.
As demand across our community grows, both Dierderichs and Vanderbergh agree this year they will just have to get creative to find ways to do more with less.
“We're trusting in God and we'll be able to do the work we need to do,” Dierderichs said.
