Local NewsThieves Steal Copper From Waukesha ChurchBy Katie DeLong
WAUKESHA - Thieves stole the brand new gutters and downspouts off a church in downtown Waukesha. They got away with 60 pounds of copper, taken right off the building.
Saint Matthias is a beautiful, historic stone church in the heart of downtown Waukesha.
Chuck Ayers has been a member for over thirty years. "It’s my church,” Ayers said.
He's disappointed thieves would steal the new copper gutters and spouts off his church the day before Thanksgiving. "People are very upset about it,” Ayers said.
Jerry Engler is one of those people. He's renovating the church and spent weeks installing the church's new copper trim.
“Times aren't good today and people will belittle themselves to low, low standards to get things that don't belong to them,” Engler said.
This is the third time thieves have stolen copper from Saint Matthias since the renovations started.
Engler says since the copper is so high off the ground, it's tough to steal, and not worth the risk, since the price of scrap copper recently plummeted.
Manufactured copper elbows cost about $80 each, but if the thieves try and sell one in a scrap yard, they'll only get $2.40.
Still, Ayers says anyone who would sink low enough to steal from a church, would do anything for a little extra cash.
“There's a lot of people who just don't care. Just as long as they can get some money, they're going to take it,” Ayers said.
The church says they may have to install surveillance cameras to try and catch whoever is stealing their copper gutters and downspouts, but a lot of people are disappointed it's to the point where even churches have to put up cameras.
