Local Family Gets Complete Home Makeover

By Lauren Leamanczyk

GRAFTON -The Longoria family got the surprise of a lifetime Tuesday when they returned to their home after a month away. During that time, the Hometown Heroes project, spearheaded by KAPCO President Jim Kacmarcik and One Heartland Director Neil Willenson, completely made over their home. The Longorias were selected for the honor because of the way they've bravely dealt with health problems. Karen Longoria suffers from an aggressive form of breast cancer. Two of her three teenage triplets have cerebral palsy and spinal muscular atrophy. Their home was not wheelchair accessible. All Karen wanted was wider doorways and wood floors so her home would be more wheelchair accessible. But, when she opened the door Tuesday, she couldn't believe her eyes. Walls had been knocked out. Rooms redecorated. Everything from computers to countertops is now wheelchair accessible. Workers installed an elevator which takes the family downstairs to a newly finished basement. There is now a physical therapy center not to mention new big screen TVs. Karen says this isn't just a new home: it's a new life for her and her kids. “These kids are 13 and I used to have to carry them places and then I couldn’t carry them and they’d be crawling. This will give them freedom and independence," Karen said. Construction companies donated time and effort. Workers volunteered their time. Local businesses stocked the house with furniture and new appliances. The Longorias couldn't be more grateful. “To all the thousands that participated, you’re unbelievable. Thank you," Karen said.
