Gift Cards Chain Email Scam

By Katie DeLong

MADISON – Gift cards are very popular around the holiday, but an issue has popped up. Some of you may have gotten an anonymous email suggesting that if you buy someone a gift card and the store goes out of business, that card won’t be any good. One Madison woman has gotten that message. “With all that I’ve been hearing about the gift cards and some of the stores possibly closing I’m like no I’m not going to go that route. Not true, but there's the old saying perception is reality, so if I was a retailer I’d be concerned,” Andrea Gevlinger said. Several retailers have posted messages on their Web sites reassuring consumers about their gift cards. Consumer advocates say you should be skeptical of chain emails like the gift card warning. If you have any questions about a store and its gift cards, call the store or check their Web site.
