Local NewsLawmaker Turned Soldier Comes HomeBy Michael George
MILWAUKEE - Mark Gundrum is a captain in the Army Reserve and a Wisconsin state representative, but he's also a husband and a father of six who served in Iraq for the last nine months.
With his wife, kids and more than a hundred family members and friends at his side, Captain Mark Gundrum arrived back home at Mitchell International Airport Sunday night.
"I wasn't just there for me, I was there for all of you," Gundrum told the crowd.
Republican Rep. Mark Gundrum spent the last nine months with the 432nd Battalion of the Army Reserve. He's been working to fight corruption in the new Iraqi government as a legal advisor.
"The hardest thing is leaving the family and the uncertainties that go with that. But I guess that's what makes it all the more rewarding when you come home," Gundrum said.
He comes home to his wife Mary and their six children. They've all been waiting months for the reunion.
"Was it difficult? Absolutely, but so many people are making this sacrifice," said Mary Gundrum.
Mark Gundrum was asked what he would do with his first day back in America.
"I suspect I'll be driving the children to school in the morning and letting my wife sleep in for the first day," he said.
"I'd like the rest part. That sounds good!" said Mary Gundrum.
Now, "Captain Gundrum" will focus on being "Representative Gundrum" again, but he will face some new challenges here at home. When he left Wisconsin, the Republicans controlled the Assembly. Now, the Democrats are in control.
