MEQUON - A 24-year-old man is dead after a domestic dispute in Mequon. It happened late Sunday afternoon on Kensington Drive, near Mequon and Wauwatosa roads. Police Monday identified the man they shot as Ryan Carey. He has no prior criminal record. Police said he was the live-in boyfriend of Jackie Chiarelli, 26, the woman who owns the house. It all started when they got in a physical fight, according to investigators. "The resident tried running away from the residence and upon leaving, in her in vehicle, was shot at by Carey," said Mequon Police Captain Scott Tyler. Chiarelli was not hit. Then Carey shot at responding patrol cars, shattering two windows on one squad with the officer inside. “He hit the car, from what I understand there are bullet fragments inside the car,” Tyler said. One officer fired back at Carey, striking him down in the driveway. “There were no words exchanged,” Tyler said. The officer who fired at Carey has 12 years of law enforcement experience. Police tried CPR on Carey, but he was pronounced dead a short time later at Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee. Late Monday afternoon, Jackie Chiarelli's mother stopped by the home briefly. She said her daughter’s doing “ok” given the terror she went through. Police were also at the house Monday collecting evidence as near-by residents asked questions. "What happened?" asked neighbor Onnolee Smith. "I have no idea except that unfortunately a young man was killed." Jackie Chiarelli's estranged husband, Luke, said that he too doesn't know exactly what happened. He describes the gunman, Carey, as a frequent house guest, not a live in boyfriend. Luke Chiarelli, 43, said they are trying to deal with this tragedy right now with family and friends. He said he also feels sorry for the police officers who were shot at. Monday night the couple left the house together. The three children who live in the house were not home at the time of the shooting. Since a Mequon officer was involved in the shooting, the state Division of Criminal Investigations is conducting the investigation.
