Lice Outbreak At Ben Franklin Elementary

By Katie DeLong

FRANKLIN - A warning for parents: there is a head lice outbreak in Franklin. The worst part: it's now harder to get rid of than ever. At least ten students at Ben Franklin Elementary have head lice. Now, many parents are concerned their child could be next. “I was a little concerned, definitely checked my kids,” The news of a head lice outbreak in Franklin came as a shock to Ann Marie. Luckily her kids don't have it, but the concern is still there. “I will continue to check because this is something that can definitely spread fast and all over,” And it's hard to get rid of. Years ago you could remove the pesky bug in a day. Now, it's not that simple. “The medication has been used multiple times and the lice have kind of figured out how to live through that,” Dr. Bradley Kirschner said. Dr. Kirschner says you still use the same over-the-counter medication, you just have to apply it more than once. “Some of those don't get killed off by some of the medication. It needs to be reapplied one more time as those lice hatch out about a week later,” Dr. Kirschner said. In your hair, it looks like little white specks. It causes you to itch and it spreads, but there are no long term effects. School officials are encouraging parents to regularly check their kids for head lice, even if their kids don't attend Ben Franklin Elementary. The Franklin School District insists the kids with lice have been sent home and are not allowed to return until it's gone.
