Man Killed In Walworth Co. Crash

By Katie DeLong

SPRING PRAIRIE - A 78-year-old Burlington man was killed in an accident involving two semis and an SUV. It happened Thursday morning near Highway 11 west of Highway DD in Walworth County. Highway 11 was shut down for most of the day Thursday as crews cleaned up after the accident. Officials say a semi and an SUV were stopped or were traveling very slowly because of utility pole work, when a second semi smashed into the SUV, pinning it between the two trucks. Officials say the driver of the second semi admitted he was bending over to get something to drink and was distracted before he crashed into the SUV. George O. Smith Sr. died at the scene. He was a passenger in the SUV. His son, George O. Smith Jr., 50, was driving the SUV. He was taken to the hospital by a Flight For Life helicopter. The driver of the second truck was also taken to the hospital. Investigators are now trying to determine how fast the second semi was going at the time of the accident.
