Kids Weigh In On How To Get Zero Out
By Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee County Zoo's polar bear exhibit continues to be one of the most popular attractions there.
Which is ironic, since you can't really see any polar bears at the moment.
Wednesday was Day 17 of the drama with Zero the polar bear, who is stuck in the moat surrounding his exhibit at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
“We don't want this to drag on too much longer,” Milwaukee County Zoo Director Chuck Wikenhauser said.
Zoo keepers have cut down on Zero's meals, hoping to make him hungrier and entice him into a crate.
“His going in there depends on him pulling on the basket that we've got in there with the treats in it in order to activate the door. So if he's got a little bit of an appetite we think that might be an incentive for him,” Wikenhauser said.
With Zero stuck in the moat, and zoo keepers looking for ideas on how to get him out, TODAY’S TMJ4’s Scott Steele thought he’d ask zoo goers what they’d do.
Scott Steele: “How would you guys get the polar bear out of the moat?”
“Use a ladder,” one youngster said.
“Put some gloves on and pick it up,” another child said.
“Yell at him,” one child said.
Scott Steele: “Yell at him? What would you yell?”
“Come out Zero!” the child said.
“Rope that I could throw it on him and tie it and then I would pull it,” one child said.
Scott Steele: “We'd probably need your whole class though to pull him up.”
“Yeah,” the child said.
“You could put suction cups on his feet and hands,” one child said.
Dangling selective sportscasters dipped in honey is another idea and while all those creative suggestions sound good, if Zero stays stuck, the last resort may be a tranquilizer and that may happen soon.
Until Zero is out, his companion, Snow Lilly, remains sequestered in another part of the exhibit to minimize the risk of her falling while the moat's safety netting is down.
