Local NewsBlood Drive For Teen With Leukemia SaturdayBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE – A Whitnall High School student needs to find a lifesaver.
David Sczesney went to donate blood, but a test showed he has a rare form of leukemia.
Now, he needs a bone marrow transplant to save his life.
David’s family is holding a blood and bone marrow drive Saturday.
It’s at the Pettit Ice Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
You wouldn't know it by looking at him, but 16-year-old David Sczesny is in a fight for his life.
“It was a big shock. I wasn't expecting that at all,” Sczesny said.
This summer, the Whitnall High School junior went to donate blood for the first time, when he discovered he had a rare form of bone marrow cancer.
“It’s really shocking, because I went to try and do a good thing and never though I might have something, something would be wrong,” Sczesny said.

It's been a rough couple of months, but David would be the first to tell you he is lucky because his doctors caught his cancer early.
He is not out of the clear yet.
His mother says he still needs a bone marrow transplant that could keep him alive. The problem is they haven’t found a donor to match his rare blood type.
“I am hopeful, I really am, that there is someone there for David,” David’s mom said.

This weekend, David and his family are hosting a blood drive and marrow registry. David says if he finds a match for him, that would be great, but he is also hoping to help the very people he wanted to help when he tried to donate blood the first time.
“I’m not looking for someone to walk in and be my donor. It’s for everyone who needs a transplant or blood,” David said.
The Sczesny family is holding a blood drive and bone marrow registry this Saturday at the Pettit National Ice Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
If you cannot attend this weekend’s blood drive, you can still help!
Eligible individuals can donate blood with the American Red Cross and become one of “David’s Donors.” All presenting donors can also enter a raffle for prizes and enjoy special food.
To register to become a blood marrow donor, all you need to do is fill out a registration form and get a cheek swab.
