MFD Remembers Fallen Comrades On 9/11 Anniversary
By Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE – Thursday marks the seventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and memorial ceremonies were going on across the country, and in Milwaukee as well.
The Milwaukee Fire Department paid tribute Thursday to 343 firefighters who were killed in the attacks seven years ago.
MFD members remembered their friends and fellow firefighters killed in the attacks, and the flag was lowered to half staff as their memory lives on.
One by one, the names of the 343 fallen firefighters were read, 343 firefighters who did not hesitate to give their lives seven years ago.
“Our hearts are very heavy. They’ve been heavy. This day will never be forgotten,” MFD Chief Doug Holton said.
The tragic reminder is daily for members of the Milwaukee Fire Department.
“It was a very personal involvement for all of us here,” Lt. Carter Hunnicutt said.
Lt. Hunnicutt, donning his FDNY T-shirt, had a special role. Not only did his dear friend and FDNY firefighter help in the recovery efforts, but he visited Ground Zero a month after the attack.
“The only word for it is total oblivion. There’s no way to really describe the magnitude of the scene,” Lt. Hunnicutt said.
Although most reflect on this day as a tragedy, Lieutenant Hunnicutt likes to reflect on it as a day of sacrifice.
”Every time we’re going to work, we’re going to war,” Lt. Hunnicut said.
Most firefighters say at the very least, they’re reminded of the 9/11 attacks every time they show up to work.
