Local NewsElection Officials Using Tuesday's Primary To Register VotersBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - Low turnout is expected in Tuesday's primary election.
There are no state-wide elections on the ballot.
The Milwaukee Election Commission estimates only twelve to fifteen percent of people will vote in Tuesday's primaries, but many polling locations used Tuesday to make sure things run smoothly in November.
Register To Vote signs were posted all over the UWM campus Tuesday.
Milwaukee election officials says Tuesday’s primary is the perfect time to encourage students to sign up to vote on November 4th.
There were only a few people casting ballots in the 39th Ward primary Tuesday, but there were dozens registering to vote in the next election.
"Since Wisconsin is a state where you can register on site at the election polls, we wanted to encourage them to do it earlier to avoid long lines, and waiting and errors,” Cathy Arney, Ward 40 Inspector said.
Election officials were targeting students Tuesday: historically an age group with one of the lowest voting rates.
“They know it's a historical election and they're really excited about it,” Arney said.
Election officials were doing all they can to make it easier for students to vote.
“They're all voting for the first time,” Arney said.
If it weren't for the signs posted all over campus, a lot of students say they would not have even known that they could register at the polls Tuesday.
"Kids have so much going on that they need reminders,” 18-year-old Devan Shihata said.
Shihata, who will vote for the first time on November 4th, brought all her friends to the student polling site to register Tuesday.
“I think it's really important because we are the future,” Shihata said.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Heather Shannon talked with people at some other polling sites as well. Many election officials in other areas say they're making first-time pollers work Tuesday so they'll know what to expect in November, and they’re figuring out what they can do to make sure things go smoothly in the presidential election.
