Raw Video: Good Report Card For Harley Party

By George Mallet

GREENFIELD - Monday afternoon found Beth Menges at House of Harley-Davidson, wide-eyed as she looked over a black Harley 1200 on the showroom floor. “It is heavier than my Vespa,” she said with a mischievous grin. “A little more horsepower too!” Menges was one of the many showroom visitors inspired by Harley-Davidson’s 105th birthday party. She watched the Harleys roll into town and realized that she too was born to be wild. “Really seeing all the women driving,” she said still standing by her dream bike. “I said ‘I think its time to switch.’ Not that I’m going to get rid of my Vespa, but just an addition to the family.” The surge in showroom traffic at Harley Davidson dealerships has been significant. House of Harley-Davidson’s John Schaller attributes that surge to the big birthday bash for America’s premier motorcycle. “It has a huge impact,” Schaller said as stood in the center of his busy showroom. “It started probably a week before the actual Harley events began, with people from other countries coming to visit us.” Click on the link under related content to see an interview with John Schaller. But an increase in Harley-Davidson sales is only a small part of the 105th birthday bash success story. Milwaukee showcased itself to tens of thousands of visitors. Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan maintains the city and its residents did that well. “I think the citizens of Milwaukee did a great job in welcoming people from around the world,” Donovan said as he stood at the corner of 21st and Mitchell in the 8th Aldermanic District. Brady Street’s Mandy Skarda was impressed with the planning of the entire event. “I think they did really good,” Mandy said as she sipped a drink at an outdoor café just off of Brady Street. “They spread it out a lot. North Avenue. Down here. I think it was really good.”
