Raw Video: Garrett Weber-Gale's Triumphant Return

  • Print
MILWAUKEE - Dozens of fresh-faced Nicolet High School swimmers lined concourse C Monday night. Most of those swimmers were female. All of them were giddy as a tall, well-muscled young man strolled up the concourse. “There he is,” a pretty girl in a Nicolet t-shirt said. “There’s Garrett." But Garrett Weber-Gale delayed an embrace with his adoring young fans for a moment. The first hug the Olympic gold medalist gave was to his Grandma Gale. “My grandma’s gonna make me a rhubarb pie,” he said gleefully. You have to hug your grandmother before you start signing autographs. “I talked to her a bunch in Beijing,” he said. “She was so excited she could barely talk. I mean she couldn’t even believe that I was calling her from Beijing. She didn’t know you could call from Beijing.” But after the embrace with grandma was over, the girls swarmed around Garrett. He unzipped a carry-on bag to reveal his gleaming gold medal. He even passed it around. Then he waited patiently while little girls, then bigger girls and even grown women got their pictures taken with him. “It’s hard when you’re in Beijing to understand the magnitude of what you’ve done,” he said suddenly wide-eyed. “To come back here and realize all these people were so excited for me… it’s truly special and an honor to represent the USA over there.”
