Local NewsWeber-Gale's Parents Talk About OlympicsBy Lauren Leamanczyk
FOX POINT – Garrett Weber-Gale of Fox Point is coming home with two gold medals.
His parents just got back from Beijing, and they talked about their Olympic experience with TODAY’S TMJ4’s Lauren Leamanczyk Wednesday night.
Can you imagine a prouder moment for a parent than watching your son win a gold medal?
Garrett Weber-Gale’s mom and dad just did…twice!
“The moment they won that race is the moment that’ll stand out forever,” Mark Gale said.
Mark Gale and Diane Weber were at the Water Cube when Garrett and the men’s relay team won their first gold.
“He came up into the stands and gave me a hug and gave me his flowers,” Diane Weber said.
Those flowers are now drying in Garrett’s room, with a host of souvenirs from a near perfect trip. For Diane and Mark, two medals is more than enough. Their competitive son wants even more.
“For him, he thinks he should have done better, but for us, we were delighted! We were hoping he’d get a medal. We thought he had a really good chance,” Mark Gale said.
The family didn’t spend all their time at the pool. They navigated China’s chaotic streets and visited the Olympic Village where the world’s greatest athletes stayed.
”They’re all speaking different languages and it’s just a neat atmosphere,” Mark Gale said.
Diane says it takes a village to help someone achieve Olympic dreams. For Weber-Gale’s family, all the work and all the sacrifice was worth it.
“That’s the ultimate goal and then it finally happens. It’s a privilege. It’s overwhelming,” Mark Gale said.
Garrett gets home next week. Lauren Leamanczyk asked his parents if they thought they’d be traveling to London in 2012, and they said they’d like to, but it’s way too early to look that far ahead.
