MILWAUKEE - Police said Sunday that a man smoking in bed is believed to have started a fatal fire. It happened early Saturday morning in a duplex on the corner of Springfield and Fernwood avenues in the Bay View neighborhood. The 48-year-old man died in the fire, but everyone else was able to escape the smoke and flames. Firefighters found the victim in the upstairs bedroom where the fire started. The man was not breathing and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The fire was confined to the one bedroom. Damage was estimated at $7,000. Police said the man was living at the Salvation Army but the landlord took him in for the weekend. Neighbors said they heard an argument in the apartment before the fire broke out.
