Vandals Desecrate Vietnam War Memorial

By Katie DeLong

SHEBOYGAN – Vandals have desecrated a memorial to those who fought for our country. The graffiti was discovered this week. The memorial in Sheboygan honors veterans. The graffiti has since been cleaned, but there is still some damage. The taggers went inside the memorial and spray painted their gang messages and signatures. It’s something that saddened the community. The memorial honors Hmong, Lao and American soldiers who died fighting on the Vietnam War’s Laotian front line. “It’s really sad it happened like this, for a memorial that represents the people that died for freedom,” Vu Yang, the memorial’s chairman said. The memorial’s committee takes great pride in the monument. In fact, they clean it every day. To see the damage hurts. The spray paint covered the story and the history of the war and the names of those who died in the line of fire. Many students come to the memorial to learn. “It’s not a Lao and Hmong memorial. It is Americans too. You have 700 Americans that died in Laos,” Yang explained.
