Local NewsNew Billboard Campaign LaunchedBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - Accept your neighbor, gay or straight: that's the challenge of a new campaign in Milwaukee.
Real southeast Wisconsin families: smiling, happy and proud. They want you to remember their faces, and what they stand for.
The announcement was made Wednesday: 30 billboards are going up across the Milwaukee area.
The message? Accept your neighbor, gay or straight.
The billboards will actually be revealed on Monday and will go up in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties highlighting families.
Families like Karen and Kristie’s. They are your gay neighbors, and they say, they are no different than you.
"For us it was a very important thing to do, we want our family to appear as normal just like anybody else,” Karen said.
The images show families together, and people illustrating common values and family commitment. The campaign is supported by contributors like Joe Pabst.
"I think we've made great strides in my lifetime alone and I have no doubt greater strides will be made. I think this is one small part of that effort,” Pabst said.
The gay neighbor billboard campaign also protects identities by only using first names. They understand there could be some backlash by some that don't accept the message.
"Putting ourselves on the line and doing something that requires a little bit of bravery means a cause worth while for us it is, we're a family,” Karen said.
So far, the response has been great.
