Raw Video: Woman Wants To Limit Fast Food Restaurants Near North Ave.

MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee woman wants to keep fast food restaurants from being built in her neighborhood. Church's Chicken wants to build a restaurant on North Avenue. The area already has six fast food restaurants, and one Milwaukee woman is saying enough is enough. The Walnut Way Neighborhood Center at 17th and North teaches youngsters the value of healthy lifestyles and healthy eating. They take pride in their community vegetable and fruit gardens and sell their produce at a farmer’s market. “So we're teaching health and good eating but we're also teaching an economic way of being prosperous that is based upon growing food and being in the green environment,” Sharon Adams said. She says there's already a saturation of fried chicken and other fast food joints in the area. “If you go down our street you will find that the choices are convenience stores full of junk food and fast foods that are unhealthy. Yes, I am opposed to that,” Adams said. Common Council President Willie Hines says he's long supported the Walnut Way, but he also supports the fast food chain’s proposal to fill the empty building. “I think the jobs, the tax base, the elimination of the blighted element, putting a million plus dollars into that location is equally as valuable as healthy eating is,” Hines said. Adams says she's not opposed to commerce; she just wants something different for the property. “To me, that would be a family restaurant. It could be one of the green jobs coming in. Yes, I want commerce on North Avenue,” Adams said. Adams and her neighbors will take their cause to Milwaukee's City Hall and the Board of Zoning Appeals during a 6:30 public hearing Thursday night.
