Positively Milwaukee: Ugandan Orphans See Milw. Doctors

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE – It’s a story that will make you smile: a group of Ugandan orphans traveling the United States made a long stop in Milwaukee. Wednesday, they got a special experience: they saw a doctor for the first time ever. The orphans from Uganda make up the “Hope For Africa Children’s Choir.” The group is traveling our country and performing, to raise money for their school. “In Uganda, people are poor,” Diana Lanyero said. Lanyero is nine years old. Just like the other kids, she has never had an eye exam and has never seen a doctor…until Wednesday. Milwaukee Health Services gave all the kids free medical checkups. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Melissa McCrady: “How is their health?” “So far, their health has been very good, surprisingly,” Nurse Manager Clover Barnes said. Doctors say many kids are underweight, but the biggest concern is ringworms. “Apparently, it’s very rampant there in Uganda, so we’re going to give them some medicine to help fight the ringworms back in Uganda when they get back,” Barnes said. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough time for the children to see a dentist while they’re here, but every child is taking home a goody bag full of toothbrushes, tooth paste and dental floss…all things we take for granted, but the children truly appreciated. “You people, you have good heart and I love you so much and I want to say thank you for being as good,” Lanyero said. It’s not easy to adopt a Ugandan orphan. Parents must live in Uganda for three years before adoption can be considered.
