Heated Meeting Over Oak Creek Postal Facility

By George Mallet

OAK CREEK - There weren’t even 50 people who showed up at the community library to discuss plans for a new postal facility in Oak Creek, still it was plenty heated. “Excuse me ma’am,” an agitated Mayor Richard Bolender shouted as a resident interrupted his speech advocating the new postal distribution center. “Just wait one second. I’m talking and you listen.” “You represent us,” Victoria Cassista protested. “You should act like that. You owe us some respect.” The feds have chosen a 64 acre site once known as Van Beck Farm for the postal distribution center. Over 2,000 jobs would move from downtown Milwaukee and other postal facilities to the new location at the intersection of East College and Pennsylvania Avenue. The mayor fears those jobs might leave Milwaukee altogether if there is too much opposition mounted in Oak Creek. “Milwaukee County can’t afford to lose 2,000 jobs,” Bolender said firmly. Residents, however, wonder aloud what net benefit there is for Oak Creek. Because the distribution center would be a federal facility, there would be no tax revenue for city coffers. However, developers say that remains a subject for negotiation. “To me, it’s not going to do us any good,” Richard Rick said tersely. As the meeting wrapped up, new homeowner Victoria Cassista stepped outside saying she was resigned that the new distribution center would ultimately be built. “My husband and I can’t help but ask ourselves, had we known this facility was going up, would we have looked somewhere else?” Cassista said.
