Driving The New Marquette Interchange

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette Interchange project is nearing it's end. For the next several weeks, new ramps and lanes will be opening regularly. A project manager took a TODAY'S TMJ4 crew to the top of the interchange and drove us around some of the ramps that'll open up soon. The highest point of the project is 110 feet off the ground. It takes you from northbound I-43 just south of downtown westbound to I-94. As you drive across the long, gradual curve, the view of the city is spectacular. Jay Obenberger, a project manager, says it's only 10 feet higher than the old interchange, but it feels and looks like a vast difference. "I think it's just a longer, gentler curve so it looks a lot taller and a lot longer," Obenberger said. The next big opening will be an additional lane for drivers to head west on I-94 coming from the north. That should alleviate some of the congestion that occurs near the North Avenue and McKinley on-ramps.
