Raw Video: Muskego Fire Feud Put Out

By Katie DeLong

MUSKEGO - The fire fighters feud in Muskego is over, at least for now. For decades, the Waukesha County city has been served by the Muskego Fire Department and the Tess Corners Fire Department. Both are volunteer departments, but the city wanted to turn over all fire fighting duties to Tess Corners to create one big department. Muskego’s Mayor, John Johnson, was leading the push to combine the departments into one, instead of two. “Well one department is much more efficient, much more effective, much more financially responsive than two departments,” Muskego Mayor John Johnson explained. Mayor Johnson proposes keeping all the same fire stations and equipment, just to streamline the management to save money. “I want to encourage the membership of both departments to come together and remember why they’re volunteers in the first place, and that is to serve the community and that’s what comes first here, not necessarily their companies,” Mayor Johnson said. That idea angered and divided residents at a meeting Tuesday night. "If I were a Muskego volunteer I would volunteer my services in another community,” Suzi Link said. "I don’t know how you people can sit up there and treat these firemen with 20, 30, 50 years of dedicated service the way you’ve treated them," Youssi said. The idea also angered the Muskego Fire Department. “We’re going to be here and serve the citizens, even if the city locks our doors. We’re going to be here. We’re not going away,” Muskego Assistant Fire Chief John Ludwig said. Click on the link under related content to see an interview with Muskego Assistant Fire Chief John Ludwig. The fire feud was put out with a compromise. Both fire departments agreed to work out a way to merge over the next 30 days.
