Woman Behind Bars For Allegedly Neglecting Newborn Baby

By Katie DeLong

LA CROSSE – A La Crosse woman is behind bars for allegedly neglecting her newborn baby and allowing her to die. Police say 19-year-old Indra Book stopped breastfeeding her baby. The child died, and that’s when Book allegedly disposed of the body. A 21-year-old man is accused of covering up the baby’s death. The two could’ve give up the baby anonymously under the state’s safe haven laws. “Good option for people that can’t go for the hospital, for maybe abusive situations, drug addiction, transportation problems, fear of what’s coming next, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter. The option is there, so the baby can be safe and cared for. There’s no reason for a person not to use that option,” La Crosse County DA Tim Gruenkel said.
