FEMA Setting Up Shop In Jefferson

  • Print
JEFFERSON - Nearly a month after the flood waters forced people out of their homes in Jefferson County, the sand bags and the damage remain. "We have a lot of work to do," said Paul Camacho. He and others had damage to their homes and are now back home. Their work, in many ways is just beginning. TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Jay Olstad: "Nearly a month later, you're still dealing with it?" "Oh yes, we're still dealing with it because we want to get back to normal," said Camacho. Camacho's basement is anything but normal. It's been gutted with at least $5,000 in damage. He's hoping FEMA will provide help. He's not alone. Marty Colip with the Salvation Army continues to drop off water and food for people all over the area. "It's been a long month, and a lot of people have dealt with a lot of water. The Rock River is still going down really slow," said Colip. FEMA will open up a disaster center at the UW-Extension in Jefferson Monday. Why so late? Officials say two reasons: they go where the state tells them to go and they couldn't get into Jefferson County right away because it was flooded out. "It's bad," said Camacho. Paul doesn't really care when FEMA got there, he just knows he needs help now, as he cleans up nearly a month after Mother Nature made the mess. "Hopefully it's over with," he said. The disaster center opens at 1 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. Monday at the UW-Extension building on Collins Road in Jefferson. Every other day it will be open at 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Officials recommend you register before going to the center. You can do that by calling 1-800-621-3362 or going to www.fema.gov.
