Cracker lead guitarist Johnny Hickman Veteran Band 'Cracker' Plays SummerfestBy Tom Murray
MILWAUKEE - The band Cracker has played around the world in the almost 20 years they’ve been together, but Saturday marked their first Summerfest appearance.
This is a band that’s showing all the signs of veteran rockers.
Cracker front man David Lowery may have a little grey in his beard, but he believes his band’s sound gets sweeter with time.
“We’ll play a festival like this with a lot of younger, more harder rocking bands and some nights when we walk off the stage I feel like telling the kids ‘follow this,’” Lowery told TODAY’S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray.
Lowery and lead guitarist Johnny Hickman were already seasoned pros when they brought Cracker together in the early 90s. Now, they often follow acts half their age.
“They’re kind of hanging out, looking cool and they’ll walk up and go ‘I have all your CDs, you guys were a hug influence man,’” explained Hickman.
Cracker’s big enough here to play a main, 10 p.m. slot at Summerfest, but the band’s fan base is even bigger overseas.
“For some reason Spain has got to be one of the biggest places for us,” said Lowery. “I don’t know why that is.”
“We heard about this for years and we finally went over for our first show and we did a festival and, David and I, we never signed so many CDs in our life,” added Hickman.
Cracker has been in the studio this summer when they are not on the road. Their most recent release titled “Greenland” hit stores in 2006.
The band holds its own summer festival each September in California where they invite fans to a giant campout. This year’s dates are September 11-13.
