Deputy Shoots Escaped Emu

  • Print
OOSTBURG - Sheboygan County authorities say a deputy has shot and killed an escaped emu after it ran into traffic. The sheriff's department says a motorist called 911 Wednesday about 8:20 p.m. after spotting the ostrich-like bird by a highway. By the time deputies arrived, the emu was in the median of Interstate 43, weaving in and out of traffic lanes. Deputies stopped northbound traffic and forced the emu across the vacated lanes toward the shoulder, but still couldn't get close enough to it to corral it. Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Liermann says the bird remained a hazard because it might have run back into traffic. Its owner, Tony Krostag, gave a deputy permission to shoot the bird. Emus can stand about six feet tall and weigh 150 pounds.
