MILWAUKEE - A 7-year-old girl is dead after being struck by a car while trying to cross the street. Milwaukee police say it happened at 13th and Atkinson at about 8:10 p.m. on Thursday. The 7-year-old girl and a friend were leaving a grocery store. The friend decided to stay on the sidewalk, but the 7-year-old tried to run across Atkinson. A 29-year-old man driving a Chrysler struck her. The driver got out of the car and saw what happened. According to police, he felt threatened by people in the area who had witnessed the accident and he left the scene. He drove about a block away and waited for police to arrive before returning. Milwaukee police say the driver is cooperating. While the investigation is still ongoing, there is no evidence the driver is at fault.
