Friend, Boyfriend Of Girl Killed In Hit and Run Speak

By Katie DeLong

SHEBOYGAN – Thursday, we heard for the first time for the girl who survived getting struck by a hit and run driver. Tara Stiebs was with Nikki Kehm when they were both struck Tuesday night. Kehm didn't survive. Stiebs was able to call 911. She told her story to TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey. Kehm was walking with her friend at the time of her death, and that friend talked to Mick Trevey about the pain. “I cried all my tears out on the day it happened. It's like all I can do is just think about it and just hurt from it,” Stiebs said. Stiebs has a bruise on her arm, but the emotional scars are much deeper. She was with Kehm when she died. Thursday, their mutual acquaintance, James Hunt, was charged with the crime. “I didn't want it to be him that did it. If it was someone else, and I didn't know the person, that would be different, but that I know the person that hit her, that makes it even worse,” Stiebs said. Thursday, Mick Trevey also talked to Nicole’s boyfriend, Nic Hubing. He was about one-quarter of a mile in front of her at the time of the accident, and ran back to her. “Just holding her and knowing that there was nothing I could do. That's the only thing that keeps coming back. If there was something I could have done, I would have done anything for her,” Hubing said. The criminal complaint says Hunt told the sheriff's department he had two beers and a shot. A breath test showed him at more than twice the legal limit for alcohol. Stieb's brother loaned Hunt the car that court documents say he drove at the time of the accident. As he fled, he went to his cousin's house. “’Oh my God, oh my God’ were the words coming from his mouth,” Hunt’s cousin, Chas Sramek said. Inside the apartment, Sramek says Hunt passed out. Sramek let deputies in to make the arrest. There are a lot of people filled with grief. “She was supposed to get her license in a week and we planned to get her hair done and her nails done and now everything is gone,” Stieb said. Hunt will be back in court for a hearing next week where witnesses will testify about what happened.
