Mother Of Teen Killed In Hit and Run Speaks

By Katie DeLong

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY - A Sheboygan County girl was struck and killed by a hit and run driver Tuesday night. Nicole Kehm was 16 years old. A suspect is in custody. People in Sheboygan County are talking about the tragedy, and the senseless way Kehm died. Now, Kehm’s mom wants the driver punished. Wednesday, Jim and Cathy Kehm looked at the book their daughter wrote in middle school. It says "be whatever you want to be." They say Nicole wanted to spend her life as a pediatric nurse. “I can't believe this is happening to any of us. We love Nicole very much, and now her future is gone over foolishness. Stupid, drunken foolishness,” Cathy Kehm said. The accident happened on a rural road. Nicole and a friend left a party and were walking home. The sheriff's department says James Hunt was at the same party. They say he was drunk when he hit Nicole. The sheriff's department says Nicole was thrown 50 to 100 feet from the impact. You can hear the terror as Nicole’s friend called 911 on her cell phone. "Oh my God, Nikki! Oh my God. Nikki's dead. Oh my God,” Tara Stiebs said in the 911 call. Stiebs told the Sheboygan Press "all I can picture is her face, how her face looked when I moved her head toward me. I just can't get it out of my mind." For the Kehms, the outrage got worse. They say Progressive Insurance covered the car and already called them Wednesday. “What a bunch of vultures. I haven't even seen my daughter yet, and they're trying to prey on me, and now they want justice. And then see to it that the person who murdered her is punished, and I promise you, I will do just that,” Cathy Kehm said. James Hunt is expected to be in court Thursday, charged with homicide, and there's another connection. Tara Stiebs, who you heard in the 911 call has a brother. He loaned Hunt the car he was driving at the time of Nicole’s death.
