Local NewsTwo Rescued After Boat Catches FireBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - A boat fire caught on tape: two men aboard a pleasure boat noticed smoke just after launching from the South Shore Marina.
The dangerous fire happened in a very busy area…near the South Shore Yacht Club. There were some people learning to sail nearby and the Lake Express was on its way in when the boat went up in flames.
A little black smoke near the engine soon billowed through the whole boat. A Coast Guard lieutenant shot video of flames erupting. The emergency happened just a few hundred yards from the Coast Guard station.
“They tried using their on board fire extinguisher, but it didn’t work,” Benjamin Bradley with the Coast Guard said.
In the video, you can see the two swim to the safety of a waiting Coast Guard rescue boat. Lois Vandusen saw the whole thing
“They finally jumped over board. They stayed with the boat for quite awhile,” Vandusen said.
Vandusen even snapped a photo of the boat before the fire.
“By the time you could see the flames it was coming straight out the top all over the place,” Vandusen said.
The Milwaukee Fire Department used a boat to put out the flames. The interesting thing is, the trident just went into service last month.
“It might have been a dangerous situation had we not had the proper equipment and tools,” Tiffany Wynn with the Milwaukee Fire Department said.
Most of the 100 gallons of fuel aboard burned off and the boat sank. In went under minutes before the Lake Express ferry arrived.
