Teens Rescue Kids From Drowning

By Erin Drew Kent

SHEBOYGAN- A 6-year-old girl is in critical condition at Children's Hospital after nearly drowning. Four bystanders helped to save her and another child. The two kids nearly lost their lives Thursday while at a beach near Lakeview Park in Sheboygan. Police think they were standing on the edge of a sandbar and fell into deep water in Lake Michigan. A bystander swam out and saved a 7-year-old boy. But a 6-year-old girl was still out in the water. Fifteen-year-old Wyatt Yocum was nearby, jet-skiing with his friends. "Somebody started waving their arms for attention, so we went over there. She pointed out some little girl, they said she was 7-years-old, floating face-down in the water," Yocum said. The three teens jumped in the water and rescued the little girl. But things didn't look good. "She wasn't moving much. She just sort of had a blank stare on her face. We got her in, and they started doing CPR on her," Yocum said. The little girl was unresponsive. If she had spent any more time underwater, she most likely would have died. Paramedics and the Coast Guard were able to resuscitate her. "It looked like they had it pretty much under control. They said they had a heartbeat, so that made me feel good," Yocum said. The girl is still in critical condition, but it could have been worse if Yocum and his friends hadn't acted fast. But he doesn't think they should be considered heroes. "I don't know about that. They had the Coast Guard coming out there, they were already there. We just happened to be at the right place at the right time," he said. Family members of the kids were at the beach at the time. The 7-year-old boy did not have any serious injuries.
