CUDAHY - Crews have been cleaning up flood damage at Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore Hospital, and Friday, TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey went along as officials took a tour of the damage. There is still a lot of work to do in the basement of the Cudahy hospital. Sewage backed up all over Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore during the storm, damaging 60,000 square feet of space. Crews not only had to clean up, but they had to sanitize everything too. After all, some patients get treatment there. Friday morning, Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) Executive Director Antonio Riley led a group of officials to look at the damage. He was there to see how bad things are and report back to Governor Jim Doyle. “Not only does it affect people who own homes, it affects this hospital here that has been seriously damaged -- who has been injured by this as well." Because it is a hospital, it takes extra precautions just to do the cleanup. Everything has to be totally sanitized. “Even taking steps to protect our stairwells to make sure that somebody's not tracking it upstairs. Our employees were just awesome. Cleaning it up and then we needed to bring in the professionals to make sure we did the job right,” Site Administrator Carolynn Glocka said. The hospital also has several big machines that suck the air out of the flooded areas and push it outside. That's to make sure bacteria doesn't spread and to keep the smell down.
