Local NewsRaw Video: Speedboat Crash Victim Tells His StoryBy George Mallet
MUSKEGO - Joe Peroceschi wheels around his garage in the most basic of wheelchairs. There is nothing fancy about the chrome and vinyl carrying him past the gleaming red and white speedboat that put him in the chair.
It was exactly one month ago that “Smokin Joe” crashed his high-powered speedboat during a race in Missouri. The speedboat is more airplane than boat. It upended, cart-wheeled across a lake and tossed Joe onto the water’s concrete-like surface at 105 miles an hour. Ouch.
Joe’s pelvis was pulverized. His hip was shattered. The event marked the end of Joe’s high-speed hobby.
“It took a toll on my family and friends,” Joe said surrounded by photographs of his many boat races. “I can’t do that to them anymore.”

The video of Joe’s boat flipping across the surface of the water has become a popular clip on YouTube. His teenaged daughters have saved a link to the clip to show to a visiting reporter.
“I thought at the time he was either dead or paralyzed,” Cindy Peroceschi says after viewing the clip on her daughter’s computer. “It was my worst fear come true.”
Joe now has months of rehab ahead. He also has a message for the rest of us who ride skateboards, horses, motorcycles or anything dangerous on the weekends.
“Wear your right safety equipment,” he says indicating the helmet and padded shorts he believes saved him from far more serious injury or death. “Regardless of what sport you’re doing. I mean it might be uncomfortable. It might not make it as enjoyable. But it’s there for a reason.”
