Local NewsI-94 Crossover Project CompleteBy Katie DeLong
JOHNSON CREEK - Drivers can now go west on I-94 in Jefferson County, instead of taking a 100 mile detour.
Westbound drivers are now shifting over to one of the two eastbound lanes.
Construction crews finished the two crossover lanes Thursday. Traffic had to be shifted due to flood concerns.
The first line of westbound traffic came through around a 3:15 p.m. Thursday. A State Patrol car led the way as westbound traffic merged into one lane near Highway 26 in Johnson Creek.
The new crossover eases the westbound lane over into the eastbound lanes.
“I think some people were a little worried that it was going to be a radical move to get into and to come out of it. You transition into the detour very, very slowly,” Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi said.
The detour lasts about five miles. Then the westbound traffic crosses back over into westbound lanes just before the Lake Mills exit.
Drivers are pleased to see the westbound lanes moving again. “Yeah, it’s gonna help quiet a bit. I live in Watertown so now I don't have to take the back-ups to get to work every morning,” Dean Bleecker said.
Drivers were a little concerned about backups once more people learn the stretch of interstate is back open, but with fewer lanes.
“Oh yeah. That's better than no lanes. If you don't know all the back roads you can get lost really easy,” Terrance Davis said.
