Exclusive: Puppies Victimized In Jefferson Flood Raw Video

By George Mallet

JEFFERSON - Five tiny black puppies are curled up together in a warm towel. Tiny whimpers come from the pile of pups. Their eyes are still closed. It is impossible to say for sure what breed they are. “I’m thinking Labrador retrievers,” says Lisa Patefield, the executive director of the Humane Society of Jefferson County. “But they are really too small to be certain.” Click on the link under related content to see video of the puppies and to see an interview with Patefield. What is certain is that the five pups and three of their siblings were born during this town’s torrential flood, placed inside a large dog food bag and thrown off a bridge. The fall killed three of the tiny animals. The other five appear to be uninjured. They were found Wednesday afternoon by Good Samaritans. “We’ve all been under a lot of stress here,” says Patefield. “So I have no idea what the circumstances were.” But if Patefield is unwilling to criticize the culprits, other Jefferson County residents are. Jason Teeter owns a good-looking mountain dog named Blaze. As he walked through town Wednesday night, he didn’t mince words. “Whoever did this is a monster,” he said firmly.
