Taking Precautions Near Phantom Lake Dam
By Katie DeLong
MUKWONAGO – Officials are worried about the dam on Phantom Lake.
The dam held Wednesday, and officials are expecting the dam will continue to hold, but that is not stopping people downstream in Vernon, Big Bend, Tichigan and Waterford from taking precautions.
The Fox River was racing over Janesville Road in Big Bend Wednesday. It's slowly making roadways impassable, but for people who live near the water, like Nick Seliger, roadways aren't the problem.
The river is inching closer and closer toward his home.
“It's just a mess, a mess. There's not much you can do,” Seliger said.
Seliger’s neighbors had to evacuate because the river actually got into their homes.
“We have no basement, it's in our home,” Jill Brandemuel of Big Bend said. “At least a foot deep on the first floor.”
The river has taken over the neighborhood.
“Yesterday we had 200 sand bags and thought ‘okay this will do it.’ Nothing helped once it started coming in and coming in,” Brandemuel said.
Neighbors in nearby Waterford, Vernon and Tichigan are also on alert.
“This is my house. I love it here. I'm not gonna move but I will leave if I have to leave. I’m not gonna stay,” Mary Tschanz of Tichigan said.
As the river continues to rise all homeowners can do is sit watch and wait.
