Local NewsRoof Collapses At Auto Parts Store In MayvilleBy Katie DeLong
MAYVILLE - Heavy rain caused some damage in Mayville in Dodge County Thursday morning.
The NAPA auto parts store in Mayville got a new roof put on last year, but Thursday morning, one of the beams in that roof broke, and water that was supposed to be outside, poured inside.
“Tremendous amount of inventory has been damaged,” John Gable said.
Gable started Mayville Motor Supply 32 years ago. Thursday, he opened the door and let TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey look in on what’s left.
Mick Trevey: “You can just look at it and you can tell it’s a mess.”
“It is a mess,” Gable said.
The destruction is obvious. What’s not obvious is how serious things actually are.
The roof collapsed and the store flooded, but the rest of the structure might be just fine. Gable says engineers will be there Friday to assess the damage.
“At this point, we really do not know what caused it,” Gable said.
Then, there’s all the merchandise. Other than being wet, many of the sealed containers aren’t damaged.
Mick Trevey: “Some of these containers seem undamaged even though they got a lot of water splashed on them. Can you wash off some of these products and still be able to sell them?”
“We don’t know that at this point. The damage assessment people will be coming in, the insurance people will be coming in,” Gable said.
Because Mayville is a small town, people depend on the store. Gable wants to reopen soon, even if it means setting up a temporary shop in the meantime.
“We’ve been blessed with the business. We now have a setback, but it’s not anything we won’t be able to overcome,” Gable said.
Fewer than 5,000 people live in Mayville and the owner says he’s depending on the support from the community.
